Latest version of how to vote cards - feedback welcome

November 17, 2010

Hi Everyone,

Thanks very much for all the advice and feedback yesterday about the proposed advertisement in the local paper and how to vote cards.

The Richmond supporter reference received precisely no support - so it is gone.

The final version of the ad for the eight Leader newspapers next week is as follows and it is too late to change now:

What to do with HTVs?

The big question now is the 100,000 how to vote cards, which must be registered by Friday at the latest.

Quite a bit of the feedback suggested the earlier version was too busy so we've come up with the following for the stong Labor and multi-cultural areas such as Thomastown, Preston and Broadmeadows. Click on the image to get a full PDF.

The other issue to decide is whether we pay the extra $1100 and go double sided with some messages in Italian, Greek, Arabic and Chinese on the reverse.

Again, have a look at all this and send your feedback through to Stephen@maynereport.com and or Paula@maynereport.com as we'd like to get these lodged later today before heading to Brisbane tomorrow for the Woolworths AGM.

How different should the inner city version be?

In the inner city, where the Green vote is tipped to average close to 40% across Melbourne, Richmond, Brunswick and Northcote, we've gone with the following. Note the reference to Greens preferences and there may be an argument for losing the "taken for granted" message given these are all marginal seats. Once again click on the image if you can't read the detail.

With a big Green vote expected, there is a prospect that the second Green Alex Bathal could get ahead of Labor's invisible third candidate Nathan Murphy. We'd love to get the message out there about Nathan Murphy's background, but the voting system is too hard to explain. We tried in this video but is it worth getting into "son of a union boss" territory on such a card. Probably not.

The same issue applies with both Liberal and Labor preferencing the S*x Party first in Northern Metropolitan. Do you take a cheap shot about big party preference deals with the p*rn lobby? Not if you don't want the HTV to get too busy.

The upper house calculator and other developments

Meanwhile, Antony Green's upper house calculator is now up and running and you see how the big challenge in Northern Metropolitan is simply getting ahead of Family First with the support of Group A, the Parents and Carers group. Once that happens, the rest looks reasonably straight forward, provided the Labor swing to the Greens doesn't exceed 8%.

Finally, there's been of media action in the last 24 hours as follows. Here's what is on the home page for today:

Wednesday, November 17: big front page bombshell in Manningham as mayor's assault charge dropped but civil action threatened. Quoted in The Age's story about council super-taxes on pokies venues and quoted in Dow Jones story about BHP-Billiton.

That's all for now and don't forget to send your feedback on the HTVs through to Stephen@maynereport.com and or Paula@maynereport.com.

Do ya best, Stephen Mayne
