This list tracks Australian-based miners with offshore mining operations or prospects.


Antamina: BHP-Billiton has a 33.75% ownership in this Peru-based copper and zinc concentrates producer.

Ban Houayxai:
this gold-silver deposit, 90% owned by PanAust, is located 25 kilometres west of their Phu Kham Operations.

Bayside: is a 100% owned and operated BHP-Billiton aluminium smelter located in South Africa.

Bonikro: Lihir Gold acquired the operation in Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa following a merger with Perth-based Equigold in June 2008. It is located in the central-southern portion of Côte d'Ivoire, approximately 240 kilometres north-west of the nation's commercial capital Abidjan.

Boulder:
is a BHP-Billiton controlled potash development project near LeRoy in the Canada's Northwest Territories.

Cerrejon Coal: is Colombia's largest coal exporting company and BHP-Billiton has a 33.3% stake. Located on Guajira Peninsular in north east Colombia, South America.

Cerro Colorado: BHP-Billiton has a 100% ownership of this Chile-based copper mine.

Cerro Matoso: located near the town of Montelíbano in northern Colombia, Cerro Matoso is the world's second largest producer of ferronickel of which BHP-Billiton has a 99.94% stake.

Chatree:
Thailand's first modern gold mine is owned and operated by Kingsgate Consolidated, located in central Thailand, 280km north of Bangkok.

Ekati:
BHP-Billiton owns 80% of Canada's first diamond mine located in the Northwest Territories - 200 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle.

Escondida:
operated by Rio Tinto but BHP-Billiton has a 57.5% stake in the world's biggest copper mine in Chile.

Gosowong: this gold bullion project, which is 82.5% owned by Newcrest mining, is located on Halmahera Island North Maluku, Indonesia.

Heap Leach:
this gold mine is located approximately 120km north of the Laos capital Vientiane, and is 90% owned by PanAust.

Hillside:
BHP-Billiton 100% owns and operates the Hillside aluminium smelter located in Richards Bay, South Africa.

Hotazel Manganese:
located in the Kalahari basin in the Northern Cape Province of Southern Africa, BHP-Billiton hold their South African manganese interests through a 60% holding in Samancor Manganese which in turn, owns a 91% stake in two manganese mines - Wessels and Mamatwan.

Jansen:
BHP-Billiton controlled potash development projects near LeRoy in the Canada's Northwest Territories.

Kayelekera: this uranium mine 100% owned by Palladin Energy, it is located in northern Malawi, 52km from the provincial town of Karonga at the northern end of Lake Malawi.

Langer Heinrich: this uranium mine is located in the Namib Desert, 80km east of the major seaport of Walvis Bay in Namibia, and is 100% owned by Palladin Energy.

Lihir Island: Lihir Gold's operation is located on Niolam Island which is its principal island, 900 kilometres north of Port Moresby in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea.

Manganese Metal:
located in Nelspruit in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa, Samancor Manganese has a 51% stake.

Mbalka iron ore deposit: the prospect which Sundance Resources is attempting to develop on the Cameroon-Congo border in West Africa.

Metalloys:
located near Vereeniging in Gauteng, South Africa, is a manganese alloy plant that Samancor Manganese has a large stake in.

Mozal:
with a 47.5% ownership, BHP-Billiton is also the operator of the Mozal aluminium smelter located 17 kilometres from Maputo in Mozambique.

Mpumalanga: BHP-Billiton 100% owns and operates four collieries - Douglas, Khutala, Klipspruit, Middelburg in the Mpumalanga Province in South Africa.

New Mexico Coal: BHP-Billiton 100% owns and operates two collieries in New Mexico, North America - San Juan and Navajo.

Phu Kham:
this Copper-Gold project is located approximately 120km north of the Laos capital Vientiane, and is 90% owned by PanAust.

Puthep: this copper project of which PanAust has a 49% stake, is in feasibility stage. It is located near the major provincial centre of Loei in north-east Thailand.

Samarco: since 2001, BHP-Billiton is a 50/50 joint venture partner with Vale relative to iron ore operations in Brazil.

Shenzi:
BHP-Billiton has petroleum owns this plant in the Gulf of Mexico,and other areas of production include Algeria, Pakistan and the UK. Other areas in the Gulf of Mexico, Malaysia, Columbia, the Falklands, India, South Africa and Canada are areas of exploration.

Spence: BHP-Billiton has a 100% ownership of this Chile-based copper mine.
