The day Kerry Packer took offence

January 14, 2008

The following brief item appeared in Wade O'Leary's Bottom of the Harbour column in The Daily Telegraph after the PBL AGM on November 3, 2000.

To laughter from the 200-odd shareholders who were present. Kerry Packer was quick to show interrogator Stephen Mayne who was boss.

Mayne, an Internet publisher and shareholder activist, had just dominated question time at Publishing & Broadcasting's annual meeting.

Then an indignant Packer snr pounced. "Do you basically set out to be offensive or is it just natural?'' he roared.

Followed by: "I'm waiting for an answer.''

Crikey. For once, Mayne was lost for words, and Mr Packer didn't get a reply.

PBL seemed determined yesterday to get into the record books as the quickest annual general meeting by any blue chip Australian company.

Chairman Jamie Packer, under the watchful eye of his father Kerry, set a cracking pace from the word go, with a brief tightly delivered chairmans address.

But then to add some extra zip, Jamie went down a path never before followed, by seeking the re-election of four directors in a batch lot.

Normally, each the re-election of each director is put to a share holder vote. This time it was all four. When share holders agreed to his motion a relieved James said: "terrific''.
