Third time lucky at the RACV

The RACV is Australia's biggest remaining mutual and we've had three cracks at the board in 2002, 2005 and 2006 - eventually succeeding on the third attempt.

2002 campaign

After a fairly lacklustre campaign given everything else that was going on, it wasn't too bad to finish fourth in a six person field as follows:

Paula Dwyer: 29,792
John Rawlins: 16,280
Dr Marcus Wiggan: 14,844
Stephen Mayne: 9,822
Bill Ellerton: 9,615
Neil Stenhouse: 3,771

2005 campaign

Having just sold Crikey, we ran a far more spirited campaign in 2005. Without making it explicit on the candidate's grid, the wonderful wife Paula Piccinini agreed to be the running mate in 2005 and despite not trying, she easily won the household contest as we came third and fourth to miss out again.

Candidate Votes % of vote
* Suzanna Sheed 42,592 38.55
* John Rawlins 32,098 28.99
Paula Piccinini 19,803 17.93
Stephen Mayne 15,981 14.47

2006 campaign

Having noted that, all things being equal, women get 20% more votes than men in RACV elections, Paula agreed to run on her own in 2006 and found herself up against five blokes, the youngest being in his late 50s. In the end she came first, which was very exciting and ever since she's been working hard to be as constructive a director as possible.
